All  of the  worlds chemical & physical means taken together have  been able  to sequester less than 1% of global CO2 emissions. Biotechnology offers an alternative pathway to sequester and avoid carbon emissions far more efficiently than the technologies in use today. 

Global efforts to capture industrial CO2 emissions with available sorbent technologies have not worked as the process is very energy intensive. In fact, it takes anywhere between 1700-2400 kWh of energy to sequester one tonne of CO2. In cost terms this works out to be anywhere between US $ 250-600 per tonne of CO2. 

Synthetic Biology to solve an Energy Problem

The strategy is to put less carbon into the air in the first place, instead of letting the CO2 emissions happen and then using energy intensive chemical and physical means to capture the emitted CO2.
